Checking a Turkish company: MERSİS and trade registry notices

When doing business with Türkiye from Europe, the brand, website and company named in a contract may differ. Start by establishing which legal entity is intended to be your counterparty. MERSİS information and trade registry notices answer different parts of that identity question.

These explanations provide general information and do not replace an assessment of individual circumstances.

Match the company’s identity across documents

The Turkish Ministry of Trade describes a MERSİS number as a unique 16-digit identifier for registered companies and businesses. Place the full trading name and available registry details from the offer, draft contract and invoice side by side. Similar branding alone should not be treated as proof that two business presentations concern the same company.

Distinguish basic information from published notices

The Ministry explains that registered users who sign in to MERSİS can obtain basic company information through Firma Sorgu. The Türkiye Ticaret Sicili Gazetesi separately provides access to registry notices and trading-name searches. A basic information result serves a different purpose from a specific published notice with its own date and contents.

Put the result in the context of the transaction

Note your source, the date of the check and any publication date. Keep a screenshot of a company website distinct from an official registry result. If the proposed contract contains a different name or number, first establish what explains the difference. This is an identity-checking method; it does not guarantee solvency, delivery quality or the safety of a particular contract.

Short questions

Where can I check companies in which I am a partner?

The Ministry identifies the e-Devlet service Ticaret Siciline Kayıtlı Sahibi / Ortağı / Yetkilisi Olduğum Ticari İşletmeler veya Şirketler. This personal enquiry differs from searching for another company’s basic information.

Where should an incorrect MERSİS entry be raised?

The official FAQ directs update and correction requests to the trade registry office where the company is registered. Identifying the disputed entry, the relevant document and its date can make the enquiry easier to understand.
